FROM THE DESK OF TEMPLE ADMINISTRATOR BEVERLY STRUMPF

I wanted to use this opportunity to welcome Rabbi Joshua Cohen, his wife Sarah and daughter Sidney, to our congregation. In the coming months I hope that everyone in the congregation will make an effort to get to know them and welcome them to our Temple family.

I would also like to introduce Mimi Shapiro, who will be taking over as the Temple Administrator. Some of you may already know Mimi from the years she ran the preschool at the JCC. Mimi has been working in the office this summer and learning the ropes. I have promised to be on call if questions arise, but Mimi seems to be doing just fine. If you have to reach her, please use the Administrator’s email address which is tbeadmin@verizon.net. I will no longer be checking that address for my mail. If you want to reach me you can email me at bstrumpf@comcast.net. This is the only email address I will be using from now on.

This summer Larry and I traveled to Canada and explored Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. In St. John, New Brunswick we read about a Jewish Museum and decided to visit. The museum contained artifacts of the history of the Jewish community in that area. It also had a classroom where, we were told, five students attended school. All grades mixed together. The curator took us over to the actual Synagogue to see the building. It was a beautiful old building that was originally a church. At one time there were over 200 families in the congregation. Now they were down to 30. We were told that the demographics changed as children went away to school and did not return to the area. It made me very said to see the decline. But the bright spot were the two teenagers that worked in the museum. Evidently, this meant something to them.

This reminded me that our future is in our children. What values we instill now, will make a big difference to the future of Judaism. Getting involved in Temple life shows your child that it is important to have this connection to our people.

I look forward to seeing everyone on the High Holy Days. May you all enjoy a healthy and happy New Year.
